TUBE MISSES FOUR OUT OF SIX KEY TARGETS

12.01.00am GMT Thu 6th Jan 2005

New information, revealed by the London Assembly Liberal Democrats, today showed that London Underground had failed to hit four out of six key performance indicators between July and September 2004.

The figures, revealed in documents to be discussed by the Budget Committee later today, show that the four out of six Tube targets that have been missed are:-

· The number of kilometres operated by LU

· %age of schedule operated

· %age of peak train cancellations

· Excess journey times

The new data comes just days after fare increases, a pay increase for Bob Kiley worth up to £51,000, and a non strings attached pay deal for Tube workers of 5.2%.

London Assembly Transport Spokesperson Lynne Featherstone said:-

"It is deeply frustrating that while those employed by London Underground are getting inflation busting pay rises, it is the commuter that is suffering from a service that is below expectation and paying more for it.

"These targets have been set to ensure that passengers get a service that they rightly expect but, on these measures, London Underground is failing to perform. For the price they pay for the service, beleaguered Tube commuters rightly should expect better.

"Investment in our crumbling Tube infrastructure is welcome, but unless transport users start to see real improvements in the quality of the services, then they will begin to question why they are paying increased fares."
