Lib Dems question 'outrageous delay' over A2 road works

3.27.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 27th Apr 2004

The London Assembly Liberal Democrats have quizzed the Mayor of London over why the A2 at Blackheath Hill is still blighted by road works intended to fix a huge hole that appeared two years ago.

Transport for London closed the A2 London-Canterbury road in April 2002, after the hole opened up at Blackheath Hill and making the carriageway unsafe.

Lib Dem transport spokesperson Lynne Featherstone has written to the Mayor, who is chair of Transport for London, to account for the scandalous length of time the work has taken and explain why the carriageway is still partially obstructed by road works.

"The A2 is one of London's major trunk routes," commented Ms Featherstone. "It is quite indefensible that two years on it is still obstructed by roadworks."
