More training needed to give bus passengers a better ride

Bus passengers can look forward to better journeys thanks to a new driver training facility opened by Lynne Featherstone, Lib Dem Chair of the London Assembly transport committee.

The Staff Training and Recruitment Centre has been developed by bus company Metroline to improve training for staff in driving buses and customer service.

As part of the official opening, Lynne Featherstone met trainee bus drivers and took the opportunity to drive one of Metroline's buses herself.

"Passengers told me in a recent survey that some bus drivers go too fast, with not enough regard to road conditions, use a mobile phone while driving and are rude to passengers," said Ms Featherstone. "Eight out of ten had experienced poor standards of driving by the capital's bus drivers.

"That's why I am pleased Metroline is investing in training. This kind of investment by bus companies should help improve standards of driving and ensure passengers have a much more enjoyable ride on London's buses."
