Sally Hamwee and Graham Tope congratulate Simon Hughes

The London Assembly Liberal Democrats have welcomed the announcement of Simon Hughes as the party's choice to beat Ken Livingstone in the 2004 Mayoral elections.

Graham Tope, Leader of the Lib Dem group, said: "Simon Hughes, with his long and distinguished record of campaigning on issues that are important to Londoners, is the only credible candidate who can defeat Ken Livingstone. "

"The Labour Party's candidate is obviously just a Ken Livingstone stooge - it would appear Labour know that they have no chance of winning the Mayoral race in 2004."

"The London Assembly Lib Dems look forward to working with Mr Hughes and forming a strong team to fight for London on behalf of Londoners."
