Lib Dems lead the way in keeping check on Mayor

Sally Hamwee has been appointed London Assembly Chair for a second term.

Liberal Democrat Sally Hamwee has been elected to serve a second term as Chair of the London Assembly.

Sally Hamwee said: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to chair the London Assembly up to the 2004 elections. Undoubtedly the tensions between the parties will increase, and the Mayor's relationship with the Labour group and the Labour party will come under the spotlight, but we must not take our eye off London's needs."

"The Assembly will continue to hold the Mayor to account, and will energetically keep up he pressure on the Mayor to deliver services for Londoners."

"Sally Hamwee served as Chair of the Assembly from May 2001 to April 2002. She will remain in office until the first Assembly meeting after the 2004 Greater London Authority elections.
