Stephen Knight, Liberal Democrat London Assembly Group business spokesperson, commenting on the Mayor's continued defence of Barclays Bank and its sponsorship of the London cycle hire scheme at today's Mayor Question Time, said:
"The Libor fixing scandal has undermined the integrity and reputation of Barclays Bank - and quite possibly the whole City too.
"The fact that Boris Johnson doesn't recognise this shows that he has learnt nothing. The best friends of London's financial services are ultimately those that want to see a new culture of probity. Sadly Boris Johnson is not one of them."
"It is time that Boris Johnson stood up for Londoners and not just for Bob Diamond.
"Instead of heaping praise on Bob Diamond, and exaggerating just quite how much Barclays have financially contributed to London's cycle hire scheme, the Mayor should seriously consider whether plastering Barclays branding all over these publicly funded bikes is harmful to the image of London.
"And if Boris Johnson would also publish in full the sponsorship contract that he entered into with Barclays for the cycle hire scheme then finally Londoners will be allowed to judge whether this was a good deal."
