Dee Doocey welcomes broadcasting contract for the 2012 London Paralympics

2.05.00pm GMT Fri 8th Jan 2010

Dee Doocey, the Liberal Democrat London Assembly Olympics Spokesperson, commenting on today's decision by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) to award the broadcasting contract for the 2012 Paralympics to Channel 4, a free to view broadcaster, said:

"I whole heartedly congratulate LOCOG on making a decision which will be welcomed by every Paralympic athlete and organisation.

"Now everyone can watch the 2012 Paralympics and share in the success of our UK Paralympic athletes."

"This is a great start in honouring the commitments that Seb Coe made in Singapore that the 2012 London Games would be the most accessible ever , and that under no circumstances would the Paralympics be an 'add on' to the Olympics."

ENDS

Notes to editors:

Unlike the Paralympics the Olympics is a 'listed' event under broadcasting legislation and coverage of events on free to view television is protected.
