Fine words won't build Londoners the homes they need4.00.00pm GMT Wed 19th Nov 2008
Commenting ahead of the launch of the Mayor of London's housing strategy tomorrow (November 20th) morning Mike Tuffrey AM Leader of the Liberal Democrat group at the London Assembly said: "50,000 new affordable homes for renting, or for purchasing, is a challenging target in the current economic climate - but it's one that must be met. "That depends on all London Boroughs working hard to see these new homes built. If they don't, the Mayor must use his full powers. Not only should the Mayor publish 'real -time' data on completion so that we can all see which London boroughs are not serious, but he should not be afraid to use his planning powers to ensure that developments go ahead with enough affordable housing. Boris Johnson has over £1billion a year to encourage the London boroughs to deliver new homes, and he must work with the boroughs to maximise affordability. "Fine words won't build Londoners the homes they need. Boris Johnson will need to act decisively or his election pledges will be proved worthless." NOTES TO EDITORS The Mayor of London Boris Johnson will launch his draft housing strategy tomorrow morning (November 20th) at New London Architecture, The Building Centre, 26 Store Street, London WC1 at 10.00am
