Mayor Johnson must lead on Olympic legacy

4.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 18th Jun 2008

Today at Mayor's Question Time in City Hall, Dee Doocey, the Liberal Democrat Spokesperson on the Olympics on the London Assembly called on the Mayor to take personal responsibility for delivering the Olympic legacy.

Dee Doocey said:

"For years we have been warning about a lack of transparency from the chiefs running the Olympic games."

"The Mayor's response to this has been to set up yet another circle of cronies, keeping himself at arm's length from any decision-making."

"With power comes responsibility and as of May 2nd, Boris Johnson has been responsible. London needs a leader, not a figurehead who will delegate his powers to a group of un-elected advisers."

"The Olympics can't just be about a few weeks of sport. Unless there is a lasting legacy for local people, it will have been a monumental waste of public money."
