"50% OF LONDON BLACK CABS FAIL SAFETY TESTS" - POPE

11.34.52am GMT Wed 7th Feb 2007

Commenting on the report made to the Transport for London Board meeting today that only fifty percent of all licensed black cabs pass the Public Carriage Office safety tests, Liberal Democrat Transport Spokesman on the London Assembly, Geoff Pope, said:

"It is a living scandal that 50% of London's black cabs fail their safety tests first time round, when 98% of buses pass a comparable test. Both bus and cab operators are supposed to prepare their vehicles for the tests - these are not spot checks. The cab operators need to get their act together.

'It may well be that the Public Carriage Office also needs to make sure that its vehicle examiners are all working to the same standard. But that is certainly not a reason for holding up the new six-monthly tests of black cabs. Given this failure rate, six-monthly tests are long overdue." ENDS
