RUTHLESS METRONET JOB CULL MAY BE VITAL TO IMPROVE TUBE FOR LONDONERS

10.41.17am BST (GMT +0100) Tue 23rd Aug 2005

Commenting on Metronet's decision to restructure and slim down the administrative side of their Tube maintenance business, Geoff Pope, Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson and Deputy Chair of the London Assembly Transport Committee, said:

"Following the recent appointment of a new Chief Exec at Metronet, Londoners must hope these changes will bring about the needed improvements to the company's effectiveness in maintaining and upgrading London's Tube system. Goodness knows we need it, and quickly.

"Our Tube needs a maintenance regime which is super-efficient if we are ever to overcome the legacy of under-investment by successive governments. Real ruthlessness will be necessary. These may well be the first hopeful signs."

Ends

Metronet, one of the company's responsible for maintaining the Tube, today announced that it is axing 300 administration and backroom posts. They also promised there would be no compulsory redundancies.
