IS THERE NO HIDING PLACE FROM LIVINGSTONE'S CONGESTION CHARGE?

4.43.16pm GMT Thu 24th Mar 2005

Commenting on the decision by Transport for London to look at extending the Congestion Charge to cover motorcycles and scooters, Liberal Democrat London Assembly Transport Spokesperson, Lynne Featherstone, said:-

"Is there no hiding place from Ken Livingstone's Congestion Charge? How can he seriously consider charging vehicles which he acknowledges do not cause congestion on London's roads. The Mayor has encouraged Londoners to get on their bikes and I believe that subjecting riders to the £5 daily charge would be a step too far, even for Mr Livingstone. Who's next? Pedestrians?

"Mr Livingstone claims the move would reduce accidents involving motorcyclists and scooter riders. But reducing their speed limit is the best way to achieve this. We know his transport body needs to boost its revenue but let's start seeing more improvements to transport services before Londoners are expected to shell out more cash."
