Call to arrest Tube beggars plays into hands of right-wingers

12.00.00am GMT Wed 27th Nov 2002

Human rights spokesperson Graham Tope has today written to the Mayor of London Ken Livingstone asking him to clarify his alleged comments calling for the arrest of Tube beggars made last night at the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Lord Tope AM said:

"If the Mayor did call for women who take their families begging for money on the London Undergound to be arrested and their children taken into care, I am very concerned."

"Such remarks could be used by some people to stir up negative, right-wing sentiment against asylum seekers.

"This is not a positive contribution towards the debate regarding asylum seekers in London."
