Lib Dems meet Mayor to voice concerns over A243 red route plan

12.00.00am GMT Wed 6th Nov 2002

Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson Lynne Featherstone today met Mayor of London Ken Livingstone to voice concerns about Red Route plans for the A243 Hook Road-Leatherhead Road.

Lynne Featherstone commented after the meeting: "Transport for London have offered valuable concessions even though the Mayor is unwilling to give up 'branding' the A243 as a Red Route. There will be off peak parking available in places where there is a need and where it's safe to do that. There will be no new restrictions for Malden Rushett."

"Residents are also being promised improvement works, including an extra speed camera and junction improvements. The Mayor agrees that pedestrians should be given longer to cross at the Hook Parade crossing.

"Patricia Bamford, Ian Reid and other LibDem councillors have been campaigning hard on this issue for some years now. I met Derek Smith of Transport for London over the A243 some months ago."

"I deplore attempts to turn this into a party political issue. Sustained work with the planners can achieve real gains for residents. Transport for London have promised to publish a full account of all the improvements they plan to make."
