New Cross-river Busway to link Greenwich with Newham12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 19th Jun 2002 Residents in Greenwich can look forward to cross-river access to Newham by bus after the Mayor of London backed a Liberal Democrat plan for a dedicated busway on the proposed Silvertown Bridge. Lynne Featherstone, Lib Dem transport spokesperson, commented: "The Liberal Democrat plan to create a high quality dedicated busway to link North Greenwich, Silvertown and Galleons Reach has been given backing today by the Mayor of London." "We are delighted that Ken is taking this proposal seriously. A Silvertown bridge may not be ready until the end of the decade, but if it is built it is vital that priority is given to excellent modern public transport. "Ken has said elsewhere that the Greenwich Waterfront Transit scheme could later be upgraded to tram technology. Liberal Democrats would prefer to see a tramway connecting both sides of the river in East London. There's no reason to put a tramway through West London and deny it to East London."
