Despite falling by ten per cent in the past year, bonuses to senior Transport for London staff have risen from £3.6 million in 2007 to £5.3 million this year.
On track for payouts: Bonuses for Tube bosses have risen 50 per cent
Mayor of London and TfL chairman Boris Johnson admitted total bonuses paid to TfL had reached £17.2 million - including £5.4 million to staff of the failed Metronet public-private partnership.
The news will be an embarrassment to Mr Johnson, who campaigned for cutting costs and railed against bankers' bonuses.
'The pay of senior staff has been frozen and performance payments for senior staff reduced,' said the mayor, who insisted TfL would save £5 billion by 2018.
.Bonus payments for Mr Johnson's first year in office had been agreed by the previous administration, his spokesman said.
The Liberal Democrats' Mike Tuffrey said: 'With TfL facing a black hole in finances, Boris's bonus bonanza is a slap in the face to hard-up Londoners who are now facing reduced services and a massive hike in fares.'
